Design Ideas

With its bright rose-pink blooms, this prickly Rose is beautiful as a low hedge or planted within the sunny border. Its winter silhouette of bare stems and large hips is a fine attribute.
Companion Plants

Plant a background of Yellow Ribbon Arborvitae (Thuja occidentalis `Yellow Ribbon`) or a darker green with Dark American Arborvitae (Thuja occidentalis `Nigra`) to show off the rose to good effect.
At the side, include the Royal Star Magnolia (Magnolia stellata `Royal Star`) for its early season interest.

Plant Lore

Plant History

This is a vigorous floribunda rose that was developed by Mrs. Walter D. Brownwell of Little Compton, Rhode Island, and introduced in 1941. They have produced numerous hybrids with strong influence from R. wichuriana. One parent is Dr. van Fleet, a rambler derived from R. wichuriana and Safrano. The other parent is Leuchtstern a little known tea rose hybrid.
