This is a native tree to the western United States that has a rounded form at maturity and good fall color. It may grow to 50 feet tall, but will usually remain much smaller on dry sites where it tends to be multi-stemmed. It has winged seeds in the late summer.

This maple may need some training to develop a dominant central leader. Once selected, this leader should more or less stay dominant, which can make bigtooth maple a good candidate for planting along streets in an area with plenty of soil space for root expansion. This species may develop iron chlorosis if grown in alkaline soils. It is drought tolerant. This tree is a good choice for use in a natural area or xeric garden area.
