This herb is grown both for its ornamental qualities (attractive blue-gray foliage) and its culinary properties where it is commonly used to season meats. This compact, woody-stemmed, shrubby perennial typically grows 1'-2' tall and features whorls of two-lipped lavender flowers on short spikes in early summer. It has rounded gray-green leaves that are strongly aromatic.
This plant makes a good addition to a sunny perennial or vegetable garden and attracts butterflies. This plant does not do well in wet conditions. Cut back in late winter to promote new growth.
