An annual plant which has many different forms and varieties, including ones with yellow, orange and red-colored flowers to 12 inches wide. Sunflowers were used by Native Americans as a food source and for medicinal purposes. Russia cultivated this United States native plant for oil use which has been adapted in American agriculture in the past 40 years. Sunflowers are currently grown for the seeds, which produce oil used for cooking or to feed wildlife and are also a source of fuel and fiber.

A nice addition to a sunny border or native garden. The flowers will follow the movement of the sun, making an entire field of sunflowers a wonder to see in the morning or late afternoon hours. There are many cultivated sunflowers available commercially, as pictured here.

Annual in all zones.
