This is an open, spreading, suckering deciduous shrub with fern-like, incised (deeply cut) leaves turning red and orange in autumn. The female plants have conspicuous pyramidal, crimson fruit clusters in autumn and winter. The fruit attracts birds.

This plant may sucker, making it a good selection for naturalizing wild areas or stabilizing embankments. The fall color is quite showy.
