The elder is a large multi-stemmed tree or shrub growing up to 30' high. The foliage is dark green in summer. It has showy yellowish-white flowers in large, 5-rayed, flat-topped clusters in June. The edible fruit starts green, turns red and finally becomes a dark, lustrous black, pea-sized berry in September. This tree is a good choice for naturalizing, especially areas along waterways.
