This dense, rounded native shrub or small tree typically occurs in open woods, thickets and prairies. It has compound, 3-part leaves (thus the specific epithet name trifoliata) that are dark green in summer and turn yellow in autumn. The whitish-green flowers appear in late spring, but are not particularly showy. The flowers are followed by pendulous seed clusters. The seeds are encased in a wafer-like samara.

This large shrub is useful as a hedge or screen planting, or as a specimen in the informal landscape.
