This dwarf Japanese barberry cultivar is a compact, deciduous shrub. This is one of the most popular of the many barberries in cultivation. It has reddish to purplish leaves along the branched, reddish-brown stems. There are thorns along the stems. It has small, insignificant, yellow flowers in late April to early May. Bright red berries that attract birds form in fall and often last through the winter.
This is an ideal shrub for hedges or accents in the shrub or perennial border.
