This large evergreen tree is narrowly pyramidal when young and grows to have an irregularly-shaped crown with age. This tree is a native to the western United States and is a common tree in the mountains of Colorado. This species is presently utilized for lumber production and has historically been used by Native Americans for dye, medicinal, food, canoes and construction as well as for spiritual ceremonies.
This majestic tree is a good choice for windbreak plantings, or as a street tree or specimen tree in areas where there is space for it to spread and grow to its ultimate height. It is widely adaptable to different soils and amounts of moisture.
